Solo motets for contralto by Isabella Leonarda (1620-1704)
Julie Comparini, contralto
Alina Rotaru, harpsichord

In the course of her long life and tenure as a nun in the Collegio di St. Orsola in Novara, Isabella Leonarda published 20 collections of works for solo voice, vocal ensemble, violin and choir with string orchestra. In spite of their virtuosity and orignality, her solo motets, set to her own non-Liturgical Latin texts, remain virtually unknown in modern times.

Samuel Barber: Hermit Songs op. 29 (1953)
Ailís Ní Ríain: Watershed (2020)

For centuries, artists across all genres have been inspired by natural bodies of water. The texts of Samuel Barber's Hermit Songs were written by medieval monks and pilgrims near Lough Derg in County Donegal, while the west Irish landscape around the "other" Lough Derg near Limerick inspired the poems in the 2019 collection And Say by contemporary writer Jessica Brown. Five of these poems were set to a new song cycle Watershed by the Irish composer Ailís Ní Ríain in 2020 as part of an Irish Arts Council Commission Award for pianist Yonit Kosovske.

Just as a geological watershed changes the direction of water's flow, both song cycles explore the places and moments that lead us in new directions.

Yonit Kosovske, piano

Lili Boulanger: Quatre Chants
Ailís Ní Ríain: Watershed (2020)
Jessica Brown: Poems from And Say (2019)

Old St Mary’s Church, Clonmel

The reflection of light on a lake or ocean; the reflection of thoughts, inspired by these waters. The poems in Jessica Brown's 2019 collection And Say, of which five were set to the new song cycle Watershed, reflect on the west Irish landscape near Lough Derg and on a watershed in the abstract sense: a moment, in which everything takes on a new direction. These ideas are re-reflected in Lili Boulanger's Quatre Chants, in which particular places change the flow of time and thought.
